Shingles Vaccination at Dubai Physiotherapy and Family Medicine Clinic
Shingles, caused by the varicella-zoster virus, is a viral infection known for its painful, blistering rash. Originating from the same virus that causes chickenpox, this infection can resurface in the form of shingles later in life. At any age, one may be susceptible to shingles, with a higher risk for those over 50 years or individuals with weakened immune systems.
Manifesting a rash on one side of the body, shingles can present initial symptoms such as burning, tingling, itching sensations, headaches, and fatigue.
Who Should Consider the Shingles Vaccine?
Adults aged 50 and above are recommended to receive two doses of the Shingles Vaccine (Shingrix), spaced 2 to 6 months apart. Additionally, adults 19 years and older with weakened immune systems due to illness or therapy should also undergo the two-dose Shingrix vaccination on advice from your doctor. There’s no maximum age limit for receiving the vaccine.
The Shingrix vaccine is 89% effective at preventing shingles in older people for at least 10 years following the two-dose administration.
